Team Spirit Key to Selection in Indian Women’s Hockey Team: Coach Marijne

New Delhi: Emphasising the importance of collective performance over individual brilliance, Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Sjoerd Marijne has said that players must prove themselves as strong team contributors to earn a place in the national squad.

Speaking ahead of India’s upcoming tour of Argentina, Marijne underlined that teamwork remains the foremost criterion in team selection, even as individual skills continue to play a significant role.

Argentina Tour to Test Team Combinations

The 24-member Indian squad is set to play a four-match Test series against hosts Argentina in Buenos Aires from April 13 to 17. The series is expected to be highly competitive, given the strong track record of both teams.

The last encounter between the two sides during the 2024–25 FIH Pro League ended in two draws during regulation time, with results decided through shootouts, highlighting the closely matched nature of the teams.

Crucial Preparation for Major Tournaments

The Argentina tour is seen as a key preparatory assignment for the upcoming FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup in August and the Asian Games in September. Facing one of the world’s top teams will offer valuable exposure and help the Indian side fine-tune strategies and combinations in what is a crucial year for international hockey.

Marijne said the tour provides an opportunity for players to perform at the highest level and showcase their readiness. “We have selected the squad after careful consideration. Playing against a top team like Argentina will help us assess where our players stand,” he noted.

Team First Approach

Reiterating his philosophy, the coach stressed that while individual talent is important, it cannot come at the cost of team cohesion. “To make it to the Indian team, you must first show that you are a team player. If a player cannot align with the team’s dynamics, it becomes difficult to secure a place,” he said.

Focus on Performance Under Pressure

Marijne added that the series will help identify players who can deliver under pressure and make the most of opportunities on the field. The coaching staff will closely monitor performances to build a balanced and competitive squad for upcoming international events.

With a blend of youth and experience, the Indian women’s hockey team will look to use the Argentina tour as a stepping stone towards achieving success in the major tournaments ahead.
